II. Worship Testimony

  • Victory in Singing: Our worship leader shared a personal testimony regarding his diagnosis of bronchiectasis. After losing his voice during COVID, new treatments are working, and he is grateful for the church's continued prayers.
  • Hymn History: The story behind "I Am Dying, O Lord" (written by Fannie Crosby, music by William Doane). An anecdote was shared about Mark Twain knowing the lyrics because he owned "a dictionary."

III. The Parable of the Lamp (Luke 8:16-17)

  • The Absurdity of Hiding Light:
    • In the ancient world, putting a candle under a straw bed would be dangerous and foolish.
    • Illustration: Two stories of "burning love notes." One by an uncle who set a bed on fire, and one by a son who tried to hide the evidence near a water pump.
  • The Spiritual Reality:
    • "For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed."
    • You cannot hide secrets forever. Smoke eventually rises, and the truth always comes to light.

IV. The Purpose of Light

  • Guidance and Hope:
    • Like a runner focusing on the next streetlight in the dark, we look for the next beacon of hope.
    • The world (represented by the news cycle) focuses on darkness and negativity.
    • Our Responsibility: Christians are called to be the light. People are drawn to us when we offer hope rather than joining in the darkness.

V. Integrity vs. Hypocrisy

  • The "Stop Sign" Mentality: We often only obey the rules (like stopping fully at a stop sign) when we see authority (the police). This is a lack of integrity.
  • Business Ethics:
    • "Backdoor deals" always fail.
    • Story of a pump repair "side job" that went wrong. Shortcuts eventually bite you.
    • Proverbs 22:1: "A good name is more desirable than great riches."
  • The Pharisee Warning: The word Pharisee implies "actor." We must not play a role when the lights are on and live differently when they are off.

VI. The Art of Listening (Luke 8:18)

  • Active Listening:
    • "Consider carefully how you listen."
    • Listening is a verb requiring action. If we hear God's word but do nothing, we are just "banging cymbals."
    • The Promise: Whoever has (listens and acts) will be given more responsibility. Whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken away.

VII. Accountability and Transparency

  • The Medical Analogy:
    • Story of a man who thought he had heart trouble but actually had a tooth infection. He wasn't transparent with the doctors about all his symptoms.
    • Application: We must be fully transparent in our relationships and with God. Partial truth leads to the wrong diagnosis.
  • Overcoming Pride:
    • Pride prevents us from asking for help.
    • We must be humble, admitting when we are vulnerable so that we can be healed.

VIII. Conclusion

  • Be a Lighthouse: Lighthouses exist to show ships where the land is. We must be the directional signal for our neighbors.
  • Call to Action: Whether at a Super Bowl party or in your neighborhood, share your light. Do not hide it.
  • Scripture: 1 John 1:7 - If we walk in the light, the blood of Jesus purifies us.
