II. Introduction: Returning to Roots

  • Historical Connection: The speaker reflected on the rich history of Midway Road Baptist Church (formerly Sunrise Baptist Church) and his personal history with the congregation, including his ordination in 1997.
  • The Main Question: God is all-knowing and sovereign, but is it possible for us to actually impress Him? Can we live in a way that God stands back in amazement at our faith?

III. The Foundation of Faith

  • Historical Reality: Jesus is a documented historical figure, just as real as George Washington. History records His life and His Roman crucifixion.
  • The Leap of Faith: While history proves His existence, faith is required to believe in the resurrection. True salvation requires stepping out in faith and calling upon His name, just like the thief on the cross did, regardless of location or formal church structure.

IV. The Centurion's Faith (Luke 7:1-10)

  • Faith Before the Miracle: The Roman officer believed in who Jesus was before he even sent for Him. His faith was already active.
  • Humility and Authority: The officer did not feel worthy to have Jesus enter his home. Because he understood the military chain of command, he recognized Jesus' ultimate divine authority, stating that Jesus only needed to "say the word" from afar to heal his servant.
  • Divine Amazement: In verse 9, Jesus turns to the crowd and says, "I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel." The Centurion successfully impressed God.

V. Passing the Test of Faith in Our Lives

  • Trials as Opportunities: We don't naturally welcome hardship, but it is impossible to please God without faith. When you face sickness, financial trouble, or the loss of a loved one, you are being handed a platform to demonstrate your faith.
  • Proportional Amazement: The darker and more difficult the circumstance, the higher the level of amazement you can evoke from God by choosing to trust Him through it.
  • A Competitive Faith: Strive to take your faith to new levels. Instead of worrying about a trial for two weeks, aim to trust God enough to only worry for one.

VI. Conclusion

  • Time is Fleeting: Life moves quickly, and our time on earth is short.
  • Call to Action: Ask God to reveal your true self so you know where your faith needs to grow. Let everyday trials become your opportunity to amaze God.
