I. Announcements & Opening
- Annie Armstrong Fund: We collected $2,820 plus a $2,000 anonymous donation for a total of $4,820.
- Operation Christmas Child: We are transitioning to collecting stuffed toys for the April meeting.
- Drive-Through Prayer: Over 70 people have come through so far! Many are unchurched and have requested information about our church. We need more volunteers; a sign-up sheet is in the back.
- Upcoming Events: Sunday School at 9:30 AM, Deacon's meeting on Monday, Wednesday night service with Jason, and our Fellowship Potluck next Sunday.
II. Introduction: The Pike Effect and Invisible Barriers
- The Pike Effect: A psychological phenomenon where past failures create invisible barriers that prevent future success.
- Illustration: Scientists placed a clear piece of glass in a tank, separating a hungry pike from smaller fish. The pike repeatedly hit the glass until it eventually gave up. Even after the glass was removed, the pike starved to death while surrounded by food, paralyzed by the memory of its past failures.
- Personal Application: Bad experiences (like getting sick from a specific food or failing a heavy college course load) can cause us to stop trying.
- Life & Workplace Barriers:
- Innovation Barrier: Ideas repeatedly rejected, discouraging future creativity.
- Growth Barrier: Hard workers passed over for promotions, losing motivation.
- Communication Barrier: People ignored until they stop speaking up.
- Autonomy Barrier: Micromanagement that crushes initiative.
III. The Mission of the Twelve and the Fear of Herod (Luke 9:1-9)
- The Commission: Jesus gave the twelve disciples power and authority to drive out demons and heal diseases. He sent them out relying fully on faith—taking no bag, staff, bread, or money.
- Herod’s Confusion: Herod the tetrarch heard about the miracles and was perplexed. People were saying John the Baptist or Elijah had returned, but Herod knew he had beheaded John.
IV. The Political Climate: Herod vs. Jesus
- A Political Dynasty: Jesus' death was deeply political. He was navigating a dangerous region ruled by the Herods.
- Herod the Great: Known for extreme paranoia and cruelty, killing the infants in Bethlehem, as well as his own wife and mother-in-law.
- Herod Antipas: Ruled a region of about 330,000 people (roughly the size of Port St. Lucie). He had John the Baptist beheaded as a twisted gift for his stepdaughter.
- Facing the "Fox" (Luke 13:31-32): When warned to flee because Herod wanted to kill Him, Jesus refused to be intimidated. He called Herod a "fox" and declared He would continue healing and casting out demons until His course was finished.
- The Trial (Luke 23:6-12): When Pilate sent Jesus to Herod, Herod mocked Him and hoped for a magic trick. When Jesus remained silent, Herod sent Him back, and the two rulers ironically became friends over their shared problem.
V. Overcoming Our Spiritual Barriers
- The Value of Failure: Just as a parent allows a child to fail so they can learn life lessons safely at home, God allows us to fail. He didn't abandon the nation of Israel after their many mistakes, and He won't abandon us.
- Staying the Course: It is incredibly easy to pack up and leave when life gets hard, or when we get burned by situations in the church. We put up barriers and get mad at God when our finances or relationships don't go our way.
- Comfort vs. Calling: 90% of us get entirely too comfortable in our daily routines. But God constantly calls us out of our comfort zones.
- Application: The Drive-Through prayer ministry seemed radically out of the pastor's comfort zone, but stepping through that barrier has allowed God to touch dozens of lives.
VI. Conclusion & The Lord's Supper
- Jesus had a definitive mission: to die for you and to love you. He let no barrier—not Herod, not Pilate, not the cross—stand in His way.
- Through the shedding of His blood, the ultimate barrier between earth and heaven was permanently removed.
- Call to Action: Stop staring at your old scars. Open your mouth, take a bite, and break through the invisible glass in your mind. Trust God to lead you into a new beginning.
