II. Introduction: God's Perfect Timing

  • Illustration: Ava recently received a job offer right when she needed it. While we often want things done immediately on our own schedules, God's timing placed her exactly where she needed to be.
  • Spiritual Application: God does not work on our schedule. He works according to His perfect plan.

III. The Pinnacle of Christ’s Ministry (Luke 9:20-22)

  • Peter's Confession: Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" and Peter correctly identifies Him as "God's Messiah."
  • The Reality Check: The disciples expected an earthly king to overthrow the Roman Empire and set up a ruling kingdom. Instead, Jesus introduces the true pinnacle of His ministry: His suffering and death.
  • Betting the Ranch: Jesus puts all His chips on the table. He warns the disciples not to tell anyone yet, ensuring that events unfold exactly according to God's timing so that every biblical prophecy can be fulfilled.

IV. The Precision of Prophecy

To understand the magnitude of Christ's sacrifice, we must look at the mathematical and historical precision of the Old Testament prophecies He fulfilled. Out of tens of thousands of crucifixions in that era, only Jesus fulfilled these exact parameters:

  • The Betrayal: Prophesied by David (Psalm 41:9) that a close friend who broke bread with Him would betray Him. This was fulfilled by Judas Iscariot (Mark 14:10-11).
  • The Disciples Fleeing: Zechariah 13:7 foretold the striking of the shepherd and the scattering of the sheep, fulfilled when the disciples fled (Mark 14:50).
  • The 30 Pieces of Silver: Zechariah precisely foretold the price of the betrayal (Zechariah 11:12), as well as exactly what the money would be used for—thrown into the temple and used to buy a potter's field (Zechariah 11:13 / Matthew 27:3-7).
  • Physical Suffering: Isaiah prophesied the mocking, scourging, and physical mutilation Jesus would endure (Isaiah 50:6, 52:14), yet His bones remained unbroken.
  • False Witnesses: David foretold that cruel, unaligned witnesses would rise up with false testimonies (Psalm 35:11), fulfilled during Jesus' trial before the Sanhedrin (Mark 14:55-57).
  • The Crucifixion Details: Isaiah noted He would be numbered among lawbreakers (Isaiah 53:12). David foretold the division of His garments. Zechariah prophesied His side being pierced, yielding blood and water.
  • His Final Words: Prophesied by David centuries prior, Jesus cried out, "Into your hands I commit my spirit" (Psalm 31:5 / Luke 23:46) and "It is finished."
  • The Burial: Isaiah 53:9 prophesied He would be assigned a grave with the wicked, but be buried in a rich man's tomb. This was fulfilled exactly by Joseph of Arimathea (Matthew 27:57-60).

V. Conclusion: Perseverance and Readiness

  • God is in Control: The fact that all 28 major Old Testament prophecies regarding the Messiah's death were fulfilled with 100% accuracy proves that God is firmly in control of history.
  • Call to Action: Because God's timing is perfect, we must persevere. Do not let yourself get stuck in a complacent routine—waking up, going on autopilot, and missing out on the Spirit. Look for the opportunities God has in store for you today and be ready to let Him take control of your life.
