II. Introduction: Changing Times and Unchanging Pride
- Travel Reflections: A recent trip to Alaska, Vancouver, and Boston highlighted the vast differences in culture, patriotism, and pride across different regions.
- Cultural Shifts: Boston, the birthplace of America, showcased deep roots but also modern cultural shifts that challenge traditional biblical values.
- The Constant: You can have times change, technology change, and people change, but the love and truth of Jesus Christ never change.
III. The Leadership of Jesus vs. Earthly Leaders
- Presidential Styles: A look at the last six U.S. presidents reveals distinct leadership styles, ranging from disruptive dealmakers to empathetic healers and wartime deciders.
- The Ultimate Leader: Jesus embodies the best of all these traits—He is a healer, a dealmaker for our souls, and a master strategist.
- The Towel vs. The Plaque: Earthly leaders often seek titles and recognition, but Jesus preferred a towel. True Christian leadership is about humbling yourself to serve others and meet their needs.
IV. The Expert in the Law (Luke 10:25-29)
- The Trap: An expert in the law tested Jesus, asking what he must do to inherit eternal life.
- The Knowledge: The lawyer already knew the Old Testament law: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.
- The Justification: Seeking to justify his own biases and limitations, the lawyer asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?"
V. Defining "Who is My Neighbor?"
- The Lenny Skutnik Example: During the 1982 Flight 90 crash in the icy Potomac, Lenny Skutnik jumped into the water to save a drowning stranger. President Ronald Reagan highlighted him to show that a true neighbor is willing to make a sacrifice for others.
- Everyday Encounters: Your neighbor is not just the person living next door; it is the person you cross paths with daily. We must look past differences to show kindness and grace.
- Loving Through Sin: The church is a hospital for the sick. While we do not celebrate or publicize sin, we must unconditionally welcome and love people exactly where they are, pointing them to Christ.
- Self-Reflection: Instead of making excuses for why we can't connect with certain people, we need to remember the grace others showed us when we were lost.
VI. Conclusion: The Unchanging Savior
- God's Power: Modern technology like self-driving cars is amazing, but it pales in comparison to the God who created the universe and holds the stars in orbit.
- The Anchor: Earthly things, like glaciers, melt and fade away, but Jesus remains the same.
- Call to Action: Examine your heart, remember what the Lord has done for you, and allow God to use you to reach your neighbors.
