The Principle of Priorities: Mary, Martha & Jesus

Scripture: Luke 10:38–42

Topic: The Principle of Priorities, Mary and Martha, Work vs. Worship

II. Introduction: The Distracted Pilot

Illustration: A pilot was preparing to land at LaGuardia when he noticed the landing gear light wasn't turning on. Instead of pulling up and prioritizing the safety of the plane, both the pilot and co-pilot got entirely distracted trying to fix a broken light bulb. Tragically, the plane crashed.
Spiritual Application: Like the pilots, we often get distracted by small tasks and urgent problems, losing sight of the main mission and our true priorities.

III. The Principle of Priorities (Matthew 5 & 6)

Reconciliation Before Offering (Matthew 5:23-24): God prioritizes a pure heart and right relationships over religious rituals.
Seek First the Kingdom (Matthew 6:33): We are instructed to put God and His righteousness first, and everything else will fall into place.

IV. Martha: The Tyranny of the Urgent (Luke 10:38-40)

The Perfect Host: Martha means "mistress of the house" or housekeeper. She worked incredibly hard to welcome Jesus, wanting to give the Savior her absolute best.
The Distraction: Martha became distracted by the preparations. She let her service turn into frustration, eventually demanding that Jesus tell Mary to help her.
The Lesson: Martha was frustrated because she couldn't let go of her desire for perfection. She suffered from the "Tyranny of the Urgent," believing she needed more time when she actually just needed better priorities.

V. Mary: The Priority of Fellowship (Luke 10:39, 42)

Sitting at Jesus' Feet: Whenever Mary is mentioned in the Gospels, she is found at the feet of Jesus (listening to Him, seeking Him after Lazarus's death, washing His feet).
The Proper Order: Jesus is not condoning laziness. Mary likely did her part in the kitchen, but she knew when it was time to stop and worship.
Key Principle: You are to worship and you are to work, but your worship must come before your work. Worship is the root of work, and work is the fruit of worship.

VI. Jesus: Sharpening the Axe

The True Vine (John 15): Jesus doesn't need us to accomplish His plans, but we desperately need Him. We cannot bear fruit without staying connected to the Vine.
Illustration (The Woodchoppers): Two men were chopping wood. One worked eight hours straight. The other took a 15-minute break every 45 minutes to sit down and sharpen his axe. At the end of the day, the man who took breaks chopped significantly more wood.
Spiritual Application: Are you taking time to "sharpen your axe"? An army chaplain once prayed, "Forgive us for thinking that prayer is a waste of time, and help us to see that without prayer, our work is a waste of time." Rejuvenate yourself daily with Christ.

VII. Conclusion: Eternal vs. Temporary

Illustration: A dedicated church worker (Mr. Ingram) interrupted a pastor's Bible study time because he wanted to chop down Australian pines on the church property. The frustrated pastor reminded him, "Herman, when you're dead, God knows Australian pines are still going to be growing."
Call to Action: Don't let temporary chores distract you from eternal priorities. Cultivate your relationship with Christ, love your neighbor, and focus on sharing the Gospel.
