The Finger of God: Jesus & A Divided House

Scripture: Luke 11:14–28

Topic: Miracles, Spiritual Warfare, Unity, and the Power of Christ

I. Announcements & Opening

II. Introduction: Understanding Miracles

Defining a Miracle: A supernatural manifestation of divine power in the external world. It is a clear event deviating from the known laws of nature, brought about by God.
Happenstance vs. Divine Power: Miracles are not isolated coincidences or accidents. When the impossible happens, we must recognize that it is God at work, not just "modern medicine" or happenstance.
State of the Union: A nation or a church cannot stand if it is fractured from within. We must be united in Christ to properly display His wonders to the world.

III. The Miracle and Our "Demons" (Luke 11:14)

The Mute Demon: Jesus casts out a demon that prevented a man from speaking. The exact length of time the man was mute doesn't matter; what matters is the immediate, life-changing power of Christ.
Modern "Demons": Even as Christians, we can be held down by unseen forces—pride, hurt, self-pity, or the shadow of doubt. These can shut us down and prevent us from seeing Christ's light.
The Crowd's Reaction: The man immediately spoke to praise God, and the crowd was amazed. We should never lose our amazement at the fresh, miraculous work of God.

IV. The Naysayers and Beelzebul (Luke 11:15-16)

Tearing Down the Good: Despite witnessing an incredible miracle, some critics immediately attributed Jesus' power to Beelzebul (Satan/Lord of the Flies).
A Modern Parallel: Society often looks for the negative when something positive happens. Even churches can fall into the trap of tearing down other churches over differing worship styles. If a church is worshiping Jesus Christ, that is what matters.
Testing God: Some in the crowd asked for another sign from heaven. No matter what God does, some will continually demand more proof. Our job is not to please everyone, but to be a tool God uses to share His Word.

V. A House Divided (Luke 11:17-20)

Satan Thrives on Chaos: Jesus logically points out that Satan wouldn't cast out Satan. A house divided against itself falls. Satan survives and rules through chaos, dissension, and negativity.
The Finger of God: Jesus declares He drives out demons by the "finger of God." There is no comparison between the Son of God and a fallen angel. Jesus' entire earthly ministry was dedicated to dividing the kingdom of darkness.

VI. The Stronger Man (Luke 11:21-23)

The Strong Man vs. The Stronger Man: Satan is the "strong man" trying to guard his earthly possessions and keep us in a spiritual prison. Jesus is the "Stronger Man" who comes in, attacks, overpowers the enemy, and takes back control.
No Lukewarm Faith: Jesus states clearly, "Whoever is not with me is against me." You cannot have one foot in the world and one foot in the Kingdom. Light and darkness cannot coexist in the same space. A relationship with Jesus is continual, not based on the feelings of the day.

VII. Conclusion: Seeing the Miracle

Recognizing God: As believers, we must learn to see the difference between coincidence and the miraculous hand of God.
Call to Action: As you talk to your friends and coworkers this week, witness to them. Help them see that the good things happening around us are the hand of God moving.
