II. Introduction: The Coach and the Player

  • Recap: Last week, Jesus dined with a Pharisee and called them out for washing the outside of the cup while ignoring the greed and wickedness inside.
  • The Illustration: When a coach is yelling at the whole team, there is always one player who says, “But Coach, I didn't even play!” In verse 45, an expert in the law (a lawyer) speaks up and says, "Teacher, in saying these things, you insult us also."
  • The Response: Jesus doesn't back down from the confrontation. Instead of apologizing, He turns His focus directly to the lawyers to expose how their legalism is hurting the people.

III. The Burden of Legalism (Luke 11:46)

  • Adding to the Law: The lawyers were experts in the Torah, but over time, "oral laws" and traditions were added that made serving God an impossible burden for everyday people.
  • Religious Loopholes: While creating burdens for the people, the religious leaders found loopholes for themselves:
    • Corban (Mark 7:9-13): Instead of caring for aging parents as Moses commanded, they would declare their wealth "Corban" (devoted to God) to get out of the responsibility.
    • Sabbath Restrictions: They restricted how far people could walk on the Sabbath, but would place food a half-mile away the day before to claim it as a "temporary home," granting them another half-mile of travel.
    • Deceptive Swearing (Matthew 23:16-22): They taught that swearing by the temple meant nothing, but swearing by the gold of the temple was binding. It was like crossing your fingers behind your back.
  • The Point: They were using the law for their own benefit and self-inflation, completely ignoring their relationship with God.

IV. False Piety: Building Tombs for the Prophets (Luke 11:47-51)

  • Honoring the Dead: Jesus calls them out for building magnificent tombs for the prophets their ancestors murdered.
  • The Convenience of Dead Prophets: Dead prophets can no longer challenge you or hold you accountable. The religious leaders were happy to honor the prophets of the past while entirely missing the ultimate sacrifice—Jesus—standing right in front of them.
  • God's Wisdom: God sent prophets and apostles from the beginning of time (from Abel to Zechariah) to point people to the Redeemer, yet humanity continued to reject them in favor of rules and regulations.

V. The Key of Knowledge (Luke 11:52-54)

  • Stumbling Blocks: Jesus rebukes the lawyers for taking away the "key of knowledge." They made it so rough for people to have a relationship with God that people didn't even want to enter the faith.
  • The Danger of a Judgmental Spirit: When people look at us, do they see a list of "thou shall nots" and judgment, or do they see the love, grace, and encouragement of Jesus Christ?
  • The Trap: Instead of repenting, the scribes and Pharisees began to press Jesus hard, lying in wait to catch Him in His words so they could destroy Him.

VI. Conclusion

  • If you stand up as a true believer in Jesus Christ and live by the Holy Spirit, you will face persecution in this world.
  • We are called to serve God not under the burden of the law, but under the blood of the Lamb.
  • Call to Action: Don't let your faith become a cold set of rules. Walk out into the world this week, face the storms, and let others see the genuine love of Jesus Christ in you.
