II. Introduction: Excitement and Anticipation

  • Illustration - Misunderstood Instructions: The pastor shared a humorous story about trying to cook salmon for his wife, confusing lemons with limes, and applying both a bourbon rub and lemon instead of giving her a choice.
  • Illustration - The Joy of Coming Home: Think about the pure, unfiltered excitement of dogs waiting at the door when you come home, or the anticipation of staying up past midnight waiting for your grandparents to arrive for Christmas.
  • Spiritual Application: This level of excitement and eager anticipation is exactly how believers should feel about the return of Jesus.

III. The Promise of His Return

  • A Unified Story: The Bible is a complete story of redemption, grace, and eternity. Jesus' return is a literal, promised event mentioned hundreds of times in the New Testament.
  • Visible to All: Jesus' return won't be a secret. Just as lightning flashes and lights up the entire sky, the Son of Man will be seen by everyone (Luke 17:24, Revelation 1:7).

IV. Be Dressed and Ready (Luke 12:35-40)

  • Unknown Timing: Jesus said He could come in the second or third watch (the middle of the night). We aren't expected to stay awake 24/7 physically, but we must be spiritually prepared and not take life for granted.
  • Illustration - Getting Dressed in the Dark: Trying to get dressed in the dark leads to matching brown, blue, and black socks incorrectly. You need the light to see clearly.
  • Spiritual Application: Jesus is the true light. When we walk in His light, we can see the truth. We are called to keep our lamps burning, leaving the "porch light on" to show we are actively welcoming Him.

V. The Master Serves the Servants (Luke 12:37)

  • A Shocking Reversal: Culturally, slaves existed to serve the master. But Jesus says that if He finds His servants ready, He will dress Himself to serve them.
  • The Ultimate Banquet: Heaven will be an incomprehensible celebration. For those who are bound to wheelchairs or dealing with illness, it will be a place of ultimate freedom, dancing, and joy.

VI. God's Perfect Justice (Luke 12:46-47)

  • Dealing with Evil: God is just, and when He returns, He will permanently remove evil from the world. The delay in His return is an act of grace, giving people time to get their lives straight.
  • Vengeance is the Lord's: When we face worldly injustices, our natural instinct is retaliation. However, we are called to forgive and trust that God will ultimately set the record straight and deliver perfect justice.

VII. Deacon Ordination: Jim

  • Calling and Purpose: Jesus came to serve, not to be served (Mark 10:45). Deacons are called to model this servant-hearted leadership.
  • Role of a Deacon: They maintain unity within the church, care for the vulnerable (like widows and children), and provide spiritual support through prayer and regular check-ins with congregation members.
  • Ordination: The church celebrated the ordination of Jim as a deacon, affirming his calling with the laying on of hands, a prayer of dedication by Pastor Travis, and the presentation of a study Bible.
